Coffee, Community, and “This is Not Normal” with Melanie Stansbury

This morning, the patio at Cabra Coffee in Cedar Crest overflowed with energy and purpose as more than 100 community members gathered to hear from Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury. Announced to Ward 22 just 24 hours in advance, the turnout was nothing short of remarkable — proof that when democracy calls, East Mountain voters show up.

Melanie spoke for about 20–30 minutes from the sunny patio, surrounded by neighbors sipping their coffee and tea, while many more stood shoulder-to-shoulder around the packed space, peering in to listen. The crowd wasn’t just there for caffeine; they were there to connect, strategize, and affirm their shared commitment to resisting authoritarianism. Conversations flowed long after the formal remarks ended, with new connections made and future collaborative events already taking shape.

From the cozy patio, Melanie pulled back the curtain on the coordinated work happening behind the scenes in Washington, D.C. with her Democratic colleagues who are standing firm against destructive and corrupt forces in power. Her message was clear: the fight is urgent, but we are far from powerless.

She reminded us that history is on the side of those who refuse to be silent. From the darkest chapters of the past, our ancestors rose to bring forth new light. Today, it’s our turn to step up, organize locally, and give her the support she needs to carry our shared values to the halls of Congress.

As Melanie said, this moment calls for courage and unity. The people of the East Mountains answered that call this morning — and the momentum is just beginning.
